Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina made landfall in South Florida on August 25, 2005, as a Category 1 storm. After slowly moving across Florida, the storm gained power in the Gulf of Mexico, becoming a Category 5 storm. Katrina made its second landfall near Buras, Louisiana as a Category 4 storm featuring 145-mph winds. Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to major populations, critical energy infrastructure, and it will likely take months to assess the full impact of this deadly hurricane. The Office prepared Situation Reports, working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, State and local governments, and the energy sector to prepare for and respond to Hurricane Katrina.
